Metro Recommends: Volver

It’s been a nice weekend so far. Last night I went to a movie (my first in AGES) and dinner with the two moms across the street. We had a lovely time-we’re going to make it a regular thing.

The movie was excellent. Volver (to return) is Pedro Almodovar’s latest tribute to women. A story about family, death, rebirth, and going home again, with a twisty plot, it kept me riveted. Penelope Cruz is magnificent and the other female supporting characters are wonderful too. I highly recommend.

Today my mom and I did a little shopping. Mom bought me a Skip Hop diaper bag for my Christmas/birthday present. I never carry any other type of bag anymore, so I thought I deserved a cool diaper bag. We went to Treasure Island Toys on the Danforth-it's a great store. The staff are super. I picked up some toys for Cakes (I had the hardest time staying in budget, but I did it).

Tonight I'm going to make a nice meal for my folks. Tomorrow Cakes and I are going to meet her new little cousin, Cole (I've been too sick and contagious until now). I hope Cakes doesn't hit him-she's been a little rough lately.

How are y'all spending the weekend?

You got to see a movie in a theater? Lucky you. ;-)

Sounds like a good movie; I'll have to put it on our DVD by mail list.

I spent this afternoon in the library and will be working on a paper. Sigh.

But there are also plans to paint some Christmas ornaments and do our gift shopping tonight (yeah, internet!).

Um, I ordered Christmas cards and tried to force peas down my kid's throat. It didn't work, go figure.

I heard P. Cruz was great in that movie. I'll have to check it out when it comes out on DVD ('cause there ain't no way I'll be seeing the inside of a movie theater anytime soon.).

That is my favourite store - well, okay, it's tied with the Toy Shop on cumberland where I used to go as a kid and is still awesome.

I worked today, so tomorrow will be all about recovery and catching up on laundry, and then going to visit a coworker who just had surgery in the evening. Yawn. Have Monday off, so some errands and xmas stuff that day. Truly scintillating stuff, lemme tellya!

did you know i was assistant manager of Treasure Island for 4 years (all through uni)?! It was a great place to work, and the great staff is a reflection.

Volver is on my list - have heard tons of good things about it. Love Almodovar.

This weekend....Friday night dinner last night. Saw a client this morning (a family that I started working with a few weeks ago). Then off to Mastermind to buy some presents - Christmas and Hanukkah. Baked cranberry/cornmeal muffins.

Tonight I am reading a few blogs while Monkeydad falls asleep watching hockey. I'll head up and read my book.
Tomorrow morning Monkeydad and I go to Reeltalk and see a film with a discussion afterwards. In the afternoon I will bake Monkeygirl's monkey birthday cake. Hopefully squeeze in a run on the treadmill. And Sunday night watch Art School Confidential on DVD after Monkeydad barbecues some steaks.

Squeezed in there as well was reconcile the bank account, draft a couple of invoices, pick up some parcels at the post office, and buy some hanukkah candles.

What kind of toys did you buy? I'm looking for some ideas.

That is one styling diaper bag. I'll have to look up that retailer, since, like you, it's the only kind of bag I carry and I don't see a Prada diaper bag in my future, although they do make them.

Mrs. Fortune: I got her a wooden dog pull toy; a wooden bench that you hammer pegs thru, a set of large wooden alphabet beads that you lace and a wooden puzzle that is a barn with many doors and the animals are behind the doors.

HBM: Birthday isn't until Dec 31 (my mom and I finish our holiday shopping freakishly early).

I have one of those diaper bags, too. I leave it snapped on to the bar of my stroller -- it's great for that.... :) And, yeah, I no longer carry a diaper bag -- just a purse, with as little baby paraphernalia as possible. :)
